Individuals living in assisted living residences or any other type of senior housing may experience being overwhelmed with resultant changes in physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual; health.
Use of substances, can provide short term relief from negative feelings a person may be overwhelmed by. In settings, such as assisted living environments, nursing homes, community homes and various other settings that are group oriented, behaviors and use of substances are often hidden until a critical stage is recognized. Resultant indices may be increased falls, behavioral outbursts, suicidality, subtle signs of withdrawal and the potential for serious sequel. It is critical to be aware of the need for vigilance in these living environments at all times. A heightened sense of loneliness and loss may lead to feelings of being overwhelmed and unable to enjoy meaningful times in their lives.
This cd will highlight behaviors and physical symptoms to be observant for and will discuss interventionist approaches to assist those we care for in all settings.

Donna White RN, PhD ,CS, CADAC Donna is the Addiction Specialist for the Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, a Public health Hospital for the Commonwealth of MA. Her 40 year career has been in health care in clinical, administrative, and educational roles. She is a certified Compassion Stress and Fatigue Educator by the Green Cross Foundation. DR. White has received multiple awards: To name a few- She is the 2006 recipient of the Peer Assistance Award from IntNSA and was recently inducted as a Board Certified Fellow at the American Academy of Experts in Traumatic Stress. In 2009, MNA awarded her the Addictions Nursing Award. And on April 1, of this year she was awarded the Nancy Valentine Leadership Award from the American Psychiatric Nurses Association, New England Chapter. She is a graduate of Boston City Hospital School of Nursing and earned a BSN from Curry College in 1985. In addition she holds an MSN from the University of MA/Boston and her PhD from Newport University. She is certified by the ANCC as a Clinical Specialist in Public health Nursing.
